ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Candidates who wish to apply for the Postgraduate Programme has to meet the following academic requirements:

a. Postgraduate Diploma/ Masters Programme

Bachelor degree with Honours from any institution of higher learning that is recognised by the Senate of Universiti Malaysia Sabah;
or,
Any other qualifications and relevant experience that are recognised by the Senate of Universiti Malaysia Sabah as equivalent to the above.

For Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Human Capital Management (MHCM), applicants must have CGPA of 3.00 and above for Bachelor Degree with Honours.

b. Master of Philosophy Programme

Bachelor degree with Honours with CGPA 3.00 and above from any institution of higher learning that is recognised by the Senate of Universiti Malaysia Sabah;
Or,
Any other qualifications and relevant experience that are recognised by the Senate of Universiti Malaysia Sabah as equivalent to the above.

c. Doctor of Philosophy Programme

Masters degree from any institution of higher learning recognised by the Senate of Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
Or,
Any other qualifications and relevant experiences that are recognised by the Senate of Universiti Malaysia Sabah as equivalent to the above.

MODE OF REGISTRATION
  • Candidates may choose to pursue the programme as a full-time or a part-time student.
  • Candidates who are under employment are required to produce evidence that they have obtained their employers' permission to pursue either a full-time or a part-time degree.

POSTPONENT OF ENROLMENT
  • Enrolling candidates who may have some reasonable grounds to postpone their registration may apply to do so. The postponement period will not be taken into account as part of the candidates' period of studies.
  • Postponement may be allowed for a minimum period of one (1) semester and a maximum of two (2) semesters during a candidate's period of studies.
  • A candidate who has been accorded the permission to postpone his/her studies is not considered as the University's registered student, and thereafter, is not qualified to use any facilities of the University, apart from seeking advice to continue his/her studies

DURATION OF STUDY
1.0
Masters Programme/Master of Philosophy
  • The duration of study for a full-time student is two (2) to six (6) semesters.
  • The duration of study for a part-time student is four (4) to eight (8) semester

Doctorate/Doctor of Philosophy Programme
  • The duration of study for a full-time student is four (4) to eight (8) semesters.
  • The duration of study for a part-time student is six (6) to twelve (12) semesters

TYPES OF PROGRAMMES
  • The types of programmes offered include (1) Thesis Preparation, (2) Coursework and Research, and (3) Coursework only.
  • To qualify for the degree, a candidate must fulfill a minimum of 30 credit hours of thesis for the Masters/Master of Philosophy programme, and 60 credit hours of thesis for the Doctorate/Doctor of Philosophy, in addition to having passed all examinations
SUPERVISORS OR THE COMMITTEE OF POSTGRADUATE STUDIES AND ACADEMIC ADVISORS
  • A candidate who is pursuing a research degree and preparing a dissertation, will be supervised by a supervisor, or a co-supervisor or a Committee of Postgraduate Studies appointed by the Centre for Postgraduate Studies.
  • In the case of co-supervising, the main supervisor will play a greater role and responsibility while the co-supervisor will assist him or her in the supervision.
  • The Committee of Postgraduate Studies is composed of at least three (3) members, including the Chairperson. In evaluating a dissertation, an additional member from a different programme, whose specialisation is related to the candidate's discipline, has to be appointed.

AWARDING A DEGREE

Masters degree or a Master of Philosophy degree may be awarded to a candidate who:

  • Has fulfilled all requirements under the Postgraduate Studies Act;
  • Has fulfilled all requirements in accordance with the regulations of Postgraduate Studies;
  • Has been recommended for the degree by the Board of Postgraduate Studies and approved by the Senate;
  • Has paid all fees.
  • A candidate who has fulfilled provision 5.1.1, 5.1.2 and 5.1.4 but not provision 5.1.3 as above, may be considered for the degree of Master of Philosophy, if deemed qualified.

A Doctor of Philosophy degree may be awarded to a candidate who:

  • Has fulfilled all requirements under the Postgraduate Studies Act;
  • Has fulfilled all requirements in accordance with the regulations of Postgraduate Studies;
  • Has been recommended for the degree by the Board of Postgraduate Studies and approved by the Senate;
  • Has paid all fees.
  • A candidate who has fulfilled provision 5.2.1, 5.2.2 and 5.2.4 as above, may be considered for the degree of Master of Philosophy, if deemed qualified.

TERMINATION OF STUDENTSHIP
  • A candidate who is pursuing a postgraduate programme, upon violating the University's rules and regulations, may, with the Senate's approval, have his/her studentship terminated at any time.
